R, Guntur Mahardika: Muhammadiyah is an organization flexible and up to date
Muhammadiyah Established in 1912 by Kyai Haji Ahmad Dahlan, Muhammadiyah
is Indonesia's oldest Islamic organization and promotes a modern Islam free of
superstition and syncretism. Muhammadiyah and its affiliated women's
organization, Aisyiyah, have an estimated 29 million members. Muhammadiyah and
Aisyiyah (M/A), though technically autonomous, work closely together on social
programs throughout Indonesia. The two organizations have collaborated to build
schools and universities, as well as hospitals and clinics. M/A have also been
instrumental in Indonesia's successful family planning program. USAID supported
the family planning efforts of M/A for 35 years, and in 2006 the organizations
took full responsibility for these programs. Dr. Din Syamsuddin served as Muhammadiyah
general chairman from 2010 to 2015 and in 2011 led Muhammadiyah's condemnation
of the Ahmadiyya, an Islamic reform movement whose teachings Muhammadiyah
considers unorthodox and heretical. Although M/A are peaceful organizations,
they have done little to address religious violence.
